ELMSFORD, N.Y. – Like many in the Met Area, David Goldin-McCarthy's love for golf started during COVID. The Riverdale, N.Y., native was introduced to the game and eventually signed up for First Tee – Metropolitan New York. That’s where he was introduced to caddieing.
Anthony Rodriguez, a coach there, asked Goldin-McCarthy if he’d have any interest in learning the ropes for a summer, to which Goldin-McCarthy said yes. Little did he know that that opportunity would be at Winged Foot Golf Club, which had hosted the 120th U.S. Open the summer before. Goldin-McCarthy was elated and used that summer to grow professionally by learning golf etiquette, understanding caddieing, networking with members, and more.
By the end of the summer, he realized he wanted to pursue a career in golf.
Suspecting college would be a steep cost, he applied for scholarships through the MGACSF and MGA Foundation. He then received the life-changing news: he’d be the recipient of the Tom Nieporte Sr. Memorial Scholarship through the MGACSF.
Now, Goldin-McCarthy heads into his junior year at Penn State as a PGA Professional Golf Management student after spending this summer as a proshop intern at Westchester Country Club.
